Workplace Naloxone FAQs

Here are commonly asked questions about using Naloxone in the Workplace.

How can I get FREE naloxone training?

Ontario’s Workplace Naloxone Program

Ontario’s Workplace Naloxone Program, which ended in March 2024, provided initial support to employers who are required to comply with the naloxone requirements in the OHSA by providing free naloxone training for up to four workers per workplace and/or one free nasal naloxone kit per workplace.

Para-Mentors was a proud program training provider for the Ontario Workplace Naloxone Program. Our role is to support employers that are required under the OHSA to provide a naloxone kit in their workplace by offering free workplace naloxone training for up to four workers.

Even though the Workplace Naloxone Program has ended, we've continued offering four FREE spots for groups enrolling in our Online Naloxone Training Program!

Do workers in Ontario require naloxone training?

Starting June 1, 2023, the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) will require employers to provide and maintain naloxone kits in the workplace if the employer becomes aware, or ought reasonably to be aware, that there may be a risk of a worker opioid overdose at a workplace where that worker performs work for the employer.

Those employers must also ensure that, at any time there are workers in the workplace, the naloxone kit is in the charge of a worker who:

• works in the vicinity of the kit, and

• has received training to recognize an opioid overdose, to administer naloxone and to acquaint the worker with any hazards related to the administration of naloxone.

Learn more about how employers can determine if they need to provide naloxone in the workplace.

Where can I find regulations for Naloxone Kits?

You can find exactly what you need, by law, in a Naloxone Kit in the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Here is a link to Section 25.2 of the Occupational Health & Safety Act https://www.ontario.ca/laws/statute/90o01#BK49

Can I include CPR & First Aid Training?

Yes! Go to Para CPR & First Aid and register now.

Best practice is to have the worker trained in Naloxone also trained in first aid, or accompanied by someone who is trained in first aid.

Where does Ontario's official guidance on Naloxone in the Workplace come from?

Official guidance in Ontario is provided directly by the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training, and Skills Development.
